Birds nests / backlashes
A birds nest or backlashes is a line heavily intertwined in itself, essentially becoming a big knot around or in front of your baitcasting reel. These nasty nests are created when the bait hits the water, and the reel keeps spinning, rolling out line that is not pulled away from the reel, because the lure is no longer moving forward.
How often you will encounter these birds nests are determined by your 1: your skill level as a baitcaster, 2: the quality of your baitcasting reel and 3: the type and quality of your baitcasting line.
Tip for minimizing birds nests
- Cast as far as you can
- Pull out a bit more line (in case you manage to cast further than that)
- Apply a small piece of plumbers tape over the reel.
If you get a backlash, it cannot go further than than the tape, which will reduce the size and complexity of your birds nest drastically. You’re welcome!
